Material by or about John Shaw Billings (1838-1913) drawn from several collections in the University of South Carolina Library. The series from Billings himself consists of 259 items and includes Billings's admission cards to medical school, his certification as a teacher, and some military records. One Civil War letter from Billings to his wife is alsoincluded. Also found are letters of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Francis Parkman, Charles W. Eliot, and in particular John R. Chadwick relating to their unsuccessful campaigns to have Billings appointed Army Surgeon General. The remainder of the series is devoted to the honors bestowed on Billings and to genealogical data on the Billings and Stevens families. Six miscellaneous letters are found in the second series; the third consists of some of the scrapbooks of John Shaw Billings II relating to his grandfather and family. The papers of Katharine Stevens Billings consititute the final series. The 137 items in the series include a 121 page family memoir of the Stevens family by Sherman Stevens; some correspondence with Hester L. Stevens, Frank C. Stevens, John Shaw Billings, and other family members; and a large amount of correspondence and notes relating to the family genealogy.

Holmes (Harvard, M.D. 1836) was Parkman Professor of Anatomy at Harvard Medical School from 1847 to 1882, dean of the Medical School from 1847 to 1853, and a noted essayist and poet. A paper on the contagiousness of puerperal fever, presented at an 1843 meeting of the Boston Society for Medical Improvement, was his most famous contribution to medicine. His indictment of physicians for their role in causing and spreading the fever was one of the most controversial treatises of the time...

Chadwick (Harvard, M.D. 1871) assisted in the foundation of the gynecological department of the Boston City Hospital in 1874, taught gynecology at the Harvard Medical School, and was president of the American Gynecological Society. He established the Boston Medical Library in 1875, founded the Harvard Medical Alumni Association in 1890, and served as its first president. He was a collector of medical books and journals.
